It is a scene of concern about a dying man that degrades into the common end.  He is dead.  His body is tucked behind a tombstone covering a dark cave and the silent, lifeless, stony space that held it.  The mourning, the gathering of friends and family, and all of the other funeral particulars are familiar.  Life and death walk hand in hand here.

As we turn toward Good Friday, we watch; as it was with Lazarus, death to life.

Considering its constancy, it is odd how little time we spend thinking about life and death.  In an effort to encourage that dialogue at a big table, I set out with my friend Chris Leary, worship leader at King’s Chapel, and my daughter Bethany to have the discussion of death in the night and life in the day.  We talked with death metal band lead singers, a veteran of the Iraq War, a hospice nurse, and more.  I share this video to further encourage the dialogue on life and death–which, as we follow Christ, turns to a discussion of death to life.

As a community, we at Terra Nova will be continuing this meditation through our services in observation of Holy Week:

Good Friday // April 10 @ 5 p.m., 6:30 p.m., and 8 p.m. in the Terra Nova Gallery

Easter Sunday // April 12 @ 10 a.m. and noon in Revolution Hall
