Bring your family for the traditional blessing, and then have a traditional Irish dinner special. (You’ll want to make reservations).
The blessing will begin promptly at 4:30PM, Thursday March 17th, so you’ll want to be on time.

SERVICE HONORING MLK | this sunday afternoon http://terranovachurch.org/blog/2011/01/service-honoring-mlk-this-sunday-afternoon/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=service-honoring-mlk-this-sunday-afternoon http://terranovachurch.org/blog/2011/01/service-honoring-mlk-this-sunday-afternoon/#comments Thu, 13 Jan 2011 16:56:00 +0000 Matthew Miller community extension http://terranovachurch.org/?p=2856 This Sunday (January 16th) our friends at Troy Area United Ministries (TAUM) and Bethel Baptist Church will hold an interfaith service to honor Dr. Martin Luther King.  As in past years Terra has been invited to participate and this year Pastor Ed will be reading from the New Testament (and wearing a suit!)

Consider coming … to pause and recognize the world shaping work of Dr. King … to support Pastor Ed … and most importantly to show our friends at Bethel Baptist that we stand with them as brothers and sisters in Christ to celebrate Dr, King’s life.

For those who don’t know, Bethel Baptist Church is just a block east of Terra Nova.  They are a historically important, largely black, congregation in Troy.  Over the past two years Pastor Eric Shaw has become a supportive friend of the Terra Community and leadership.

Hope you can make it!

Here’s how it works. We gather on the third Monday of each month from 6:30PM-8:30PM. On the first night, you just show up and learn from the intro lecture. Each month thereafter, you read roughly 75 pages and come ready to discuss them. We meet in The Trojan Room at The Taproom at Brown’s Brewing Company.

This fall we are studying C.S. Lewis’ classic work The Weight of Glory. If you’d like to attend, sign up using THIS FORM. Space is capped at 50, so sign up soon!

STEWARDSHIP | paul gordon video http://terranovachurch.org/blog/2010/07/stewardship-paul-gordon-video/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=stewardship-paul-gordon-video http://terranovachurch.org/blog/2010/07/stewardship-paul-gordon-video/#comments Mon, 19 Jul 2010 18:50:42 +0000 Phil Taylor executive pastor http://terranovachurch.org/?p=2292

This past Sunday, we continued in our Spiritual Discipline Series as we looked at the Stewardship of our Time and Money. (Listen to the teaching HERE). I put Terra Nova’s Stewardship Pastor, Paul Gordon, in front of a camera and asked him to share his heart on Financial Stewardship. This video was shown in the middle of the teaching on this topic yesterday.

Click here to view the embedded video.

I also asked Paul to pull together some statistics from Terra Nova Church’s giving patterns. I only had time to share a couple of them on Sunday during the teaching time, but here is the rest of what Paul’s research on the giving patterns at Terra Nova showed. I know that some of you are bored as soon as you hear the word “statistic”, while others eat this stuff up. If you would ever like to learn more about how Terra’s Finance Team works, how we do budgeting, auditing etc. don’t hesitate to email Paul Gordon.

Terra Nova specific stats::

63% OF HOUSEHOLDS SUPPORT TERRA FINANCIALLY

37% OF THE HOUSEHOLDS AT TERRA DO NOT GIVE.

Of these:
The top 10% of households comprise 53% of the operating budget.

The average giving household gives about $2,500 per year    or   $48 per week   or   $215 per month.

·       A Reachable Goal: “According to the Borgen Project, annual expenditures of $19 billion between now and 2015 could eliminate global starvation and malnutrition.  Another $12 billion per year over that same time period could provide education for every child on earth.  And an additional $15 billion each year could provide universal access to clean water and sanitation.”  – Stanford Social Innovation Review

Thanks to Brandon Balkenbush at Living Stones Church in Reno, NV for sending me these stats.

TERRA FILM MAKER | gets media attention, see links here http://terranovachurch.org/blog/2009/12/terra-film-maker-gets-media-attention-see-links-here/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=terra-film-maker-gets-media-attention-see-links-here http://terranovachurch.org/blog/2009/12/terra-film-maker-gets-media-attention-see-links-here/#comments Sun, 13 Dec 2009 22:07:19 +0000 Phil Taylor executive pastor http://www.terranovachurch.org/blog/?p=881

Lots were involved as extras this past Saturday as filmmaker and Terra Nova member Roman Jaquez shot one of the final scenes in a short film that he’s been working on for over a year. Using Monument square in downtown Troy as the the backdrop, several hundred people joined in for the filming. After the filming, many people piled into Meka’s Lounge. The new Martini and wine bar opened by a couple other people from Terra Nova.

The Troy Record was there and you can find that front page article HERE.

Capital News 9 was also there and covered it on local television. Find that story HERE.

CBS 6 was there and posted this photo gallery from the shoot HERE.

Capital News 13 also posted video HERE. (Roman says it’s the best of all of it)

Brian Hofmeister painting

Great opening on “Black Friday”. It’s an exhibit that everyone should see. The artists are Brian Hofmeister and mi Chelle Vara . Brian is a pastor at Christ Church in Guilderland. His beautiful paintings capture the essence of turn of the century (1900) architecture in Schenectady. Brian’s talent for blending colors on canvas makes him one of the regions emerging artists you have to see. And the abstract metal sculptures by miChelle interspersed among brian’s paintings make this a most interesting exhibit you don’t want to miss! It’s on display through January.

This is a fun winter festival that is very high on the “Charles Dickens-O-meter”. Expect to see old school santa and period costumes strolling next to the food and merchandise vendors. It’s a good time. No worries about it affecting your ability to park for church at Terra Nova as most people gravitate towards Monument Square. Consider heading down there after church to take in the waistcoat and top hat infused holiday goodness.

This Friday night is our next gallery opening. Show opens at 5PM and runs till 9PM. Our featured painter this month, Carole Warburton is showing her “Vanishing Barns” series. Why barns? In the early 1600’s the first farms were established in NY State. Farmers built timber barns using the styles and techniques they brought with them from Europe. Carole says “I have chosen Barns as a theme for my most recent group of paintings in the hopes of heightening awareness of their importance and the precious heritage they represent in New York State.”
Also on display is work by featured Photographer Ann Fantauzzi. She has captured the wildlife and culture of Namibia on recent visits to Africa. You won’t want to miss it. As always this gallery opening is in conjunction with TROY NIGHT OUT. Be sure to check out the map of other galleries and shops that are open.
